NDIS mandatory registration — what it means for participants and providers

The NDIS is expanding mandatory registration requirements for providers from 2026. Here is what Wei Community Care participants need to know.

The NDIS is strengthening its rules around which providers must be registered — and it directly affects the quality of care you receive as a participant. Here is what is changing and what it means for you.

           What is mandatory registration?

Registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission means a provider has been assessed against strict national quality and safety standards. Registered providers are subject to regular audits, oversight and accountability — giving participants and families greater confidence in the support they receive.

           What is changing?

Previously, many providers could deliver certain NDIS services without being registered. That is changing. From 1 July 2026, Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers and platform providers will be required to register, bringing them under the same standards as other registered providers.

           National Disability Insurance Scheme

The expansion doesn't stop there. Three new support categories are becoming mandatory to register for — personal care, daily living supports, and supports provided in closed settings — with broader registration expansion expected to commence from July 2027 and full implementation by the end of 2030.

           Why is this happening?

The growth of the NDIS has brought concerns around fraud, unsafe services and poor quality care — in some cases participants have received support from providers with very little oversight. These reforms are designed to create a safer, more accountable system for everyone.

What does this mean for you as a participant?

These changes are good news for participants. You can have greater confidence that your provider meets nationally consistent quality standards. If you are currently receiving support from an unregistered provider, it is worth checking whether they will be required to register and whether they intend to do so.

Wei Community Care is already registered

Wei Community Care is a registered NDIS provider — meaning we already meet the strict quality and safety standards required by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. You don't need to worry about any disruption to your supports.

The Australian Government has introduced major NDIS reforms in 2026. Here is what Wei Community Care participants need to know and how we can help.

The Australian Government has introduced major changes to the NDIS in 2026 — the most significant restructure since the scheme launched in 2013. Here is what you need to know.

           What has changed?

On 14 May 2026, the Government introduced the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill to Parliament. The reforms are built around four key goals — clarifying who is eligible for the NDIS, improving the quality of services, reducing fraud, and making the scheme financially sustainable for the long term.

           Why are these changes happening?

The NDIS was originally designed to support around 410,000 participants. It now supports more than 760,000 Australians and is on track to cost more than $50 billion this year. Without reform, that figure was heading toward $70 billion by 2030. The Government's goal is to bring annual growth down to around 2 per cent and ensure the scheme remains available for future generations.

What does this mean for participants?

The changes will be introduced gradually over time — not all at once. Key changes include tighter eligibility criteria for new applicants, a new support needs assessment process to make plans more consistent across Australia, stronger powers for the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and upgrades to the claims and payments system beginning July 2026. Importantly, changes will not impact supports essential to critical care and daily living needs.

           When will the changes happen?

Changes will be rolled out over several years. Expansion of provider registration begins July 2027 with full implementation by 2030. The new claims and payments system begins rolling out from July 2026. The Government has committed to consulting with the disability community at every stage.

           What should I do now?

If you are a current NDIS participant your existing plan continues during the transition. If you are unsure how these changes affect you, speak to your support coordinator. NDIS plans are divided into three budget categories — Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports and Capital Supports. Understanding which category each support comes from helps you use your funding more effectively.

           Set clear goals

Your plan is built around your goals. The clearer your goals, the better your plan will be. Think about what independence, employment, social connection and health mean to you.

           Review your plan regularly

Your needs change over time and your plan should reflect that. If your circumstances change significantly, you can request an unscheduled review at any time.

           Work with a support coordinator

A support coordinator can help you understand your plan, find the right providers and make sure your funding is being used in the best way. This is exactly what Wei Community Care's Level 2 support coordination service does.

Choosing the right NDIS provider is one of the most important decisions you will make. Here are 5 things to look for.

With thousands of NDIS providers across Australia, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Here are five things to look for.

           1.

           They are NDIS registered

Always check your provider is registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Wei Community Care is a registered NDIS provider.

           2.

           They offer person-centred support

Your support should be built around your goals and your lifestyle — not a one-size-fits-all package.

           3.

           They are culturally sensitive

Make sure your provider understands and respects your cultural background and values. Wei Community Care works with participants from all backgrounds across Victoria.

           4.

           They communicate clearly and honestly

A good provider will be transparent about pricing and what is included in your plan — no hidden fees or surprises.

           5.

           You feel comfortable with them

Trust your instincts. You should feel listened to and respected from the very first conversation.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government program that provides funding to people with permanent and significant disabilities. It gives you greater choice and control over the support you need to live a more independent and fulfilling life.

           Who is eligible?

To access the NDIS you need to be under 65 years of age, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to carry out everyday activities.

           What can the NDIS fund?

Your NDIS plan can fund daily personal care, transport, therapy, support coordination, household tasks, community participation, home modifications and equipment.

           How do I apply?

Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 or submit an access request at ndis.gov.au. You will need evidence from a treating professional about your disability and how it affects your daily life.
