NDIS reforms 2026 — what it means for you

The Australian Government has introduced major NDIS reforms in 2026. Here is what Wei Community Care participants need to know and how we can help.

The Australian Government has introduced major changes to the NDIS in 2026 — the most significant restructure since the scheme launched in 2013. Here is what you need to know.

What has changed? On 14 May 2026, the Government introduced the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill to Parliament. The reforms are built around four key goals — clarifying who is eligible for the NDIS, improving the quality of services, reducing fraud, and making the scheme financially sustainable for the long term.

Why are these changes happening? The NDIS was originally designed to support around 410,000 participants. It now supports more than 760,000 Australians and is on track to cost more than $50 billion this year. Without reform, that figure was heading toward $70 billion by 2030. The Government's goal is to bring annual growth down to around 2 per cent and ensure the scheme remains available for future generations.

What does this mean for participants? The changes will be introduced gradually over time — not all at once. Key changes include tighter eligibility criteria for new applicants, a new support needs assessment process to make plans more consistent across Australia, stronger powers for the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and upgrades to the claims and payments system beginning July 2026. Importantly, changes will not impact supports essential to critical care and daily living needs.

When will the changes happen? Changes will be rolled out over several years. Expansion of provider registration begins July 2027 with full implementation by 2030. The new claims and payments system begins rolling out from July 2026. The Government has committed to consulting with the disability community at every stage.

What should I do now? If you are a current NDIS participant your existing plan continues during the transition. If you are unsure how these changes affect you, speak to your support coordinator.
